About us

Mission

GUI | IUG

We are an independent cultural institution based in Schwerin. Our dual institute, GUI – IUG, evolved from an association founded in 2013 to support the expansion of the Staatliches Museum Schwerin. The artist Günther Uecker donated an edition of his large-format embossed prints to support this project. At the initiative of our founding director, Prof. Dr. Kornelia von Berswordt-Wallrabe, and following an amendment to the statutes in 2016, these funds were consensually repurposed and have since been dedicated to supporting young scholars and artists.

On the one hand, we support and publish traditional art-historical research projects with a focus on the ‘German Post-War Avant-Garde.’ This pillar of our work is represented by the name ‘GUI – Günther Uecker Institute.’

On the other hand, we create public platforms for the innovative work of interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners in the field of Artistic Research. This mission is reflected in the name ‘IUG – Institute for Environment and Design’ (Institut für Umwelt und Gestaltung), through which we have been funding and initiating projects since 2023. With the IUG, we support innovative concepts for socially relevant, interdisciplinary formats, operating across various locations and in collaboration with changing institutional partners.
