Invitation: Book Presentation Environment & Archive on December 5 in Berlin

The GUI | IUG, together with the Robert Havemann Society, invites you to the presentation of Daniel Wolter’s Environment & Archive. Oppositional Environments in the GDR in Berlin.
On Friday, December 5, the author will speak about the development of the publication and, in conversation with writer Luise Meier (author of Hyphen and MRX Maschine), discuss resistant ecologies and archived legacies in this context.

When: December 5, 2025, 6:00 pm
Where: CITTIPUNKT, Brüsseler Straße 36A, 13359 Berlin

Environment & Archive examines environmental destruction in the GDR and is based on extensive research into photographic holdings from the Archive of the GDR Opposition at the Robert Havemann Society. Wolter traces connections between the concepts of “environment” and “archive” within the historical context of the GDR’s environmental movement. Drawing on a media-ecological perspective, he correlates different categories of photographic representation and identifies the point at which environment inscribes itself into the photographic image while environmental interventions simultaneously emerge.

The project was supported by a fellowship from the GUI | IUG and is published in cooperation with the Robert Havemann Society.

Environment & Archive is Volume 1 of the Zweierlei series of the Institute for Environment & Design (IUG), focusing on contemporary art studies and artistic research. The series centers on the art and culture of the GDR.

Environment & Archive is published by Deutscher Kunstverlag and is now available in bookstores everywhere.
